Certain celebrities become famous because they are talented in one specific area of entertainment. However, there are plenty of men and women who become renowned because their abilities span a variety of mediums. This is the case with Victor Garber. Though many know him for his acting roles on television, Garber has also gained notoriety for his work on stage and as a musician. What’s more, he is a registered minister of the Universal Life Church who officiated the wedding of a very prolific couple. Explore these details and learn more about Garber’s life and accomplishments.

Taking an Interest in Entertainment

Victor Garber was born in 1949 in London, Ontario, Canada. His mother, Hope Garber, was a famous dancer and television personality in Canada. When Victor was a child, his mom hosted the television program “At Home with Hope Garber.” Being around performers from an early age, Victor took an immediate interest in the world of entertainment. He studied acting as a teenager and was involved with a number of theatre programs in and around his hometown. However, he also had a passion for music. It was this interest that would slowly push him into the limelight.

Starting as a Musician

In the 1960s, Garber was playing music and acting as a solo folk singer. He eventually started working with other musicians and, in 1967, formed the pop vocal group The Sugar Shoppe. The band enjoyed a bit of success, performing on popular television programs like “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Though The Sugar Shoppe would make it onto the Canadian Top 40, the band did not play together for long. By 1970, the members of the band would go their separate ways. For Garber, this meant getting back to his roots as a performer.

Becoming a Staple of the Stage

One of Garber’s earliest roles was as Jesus in a 1972 production of “Godspell” in Toronto. In this show, Garber would perform alongside a slew of talented individuals, including Martin Short, Gilda Radner, Andrea Martin, and Eugene Levy. This production would also launch his career as an actor. While he would reprise his role as Jesus in the 1973 film version of “Godspell,” he spent most of his time performing on Broadway. Highlights from his stage career include being in the original casts of noteworthy shows like “Sweeney Todd,” “Noises Off” and “Assassins.”

Appearing on the Silver Screen

Garber’s film and television credits are as impressive as his theatrical background. He would appear in timeless movies like James Cameron’s “Titanic,” as well as cult classics like “Legally Blonde” and “The First Wives Club.” While he has made countless guest appearances on a variety of television shows, his most known role is as the father of Jennifer Garner’s character on “Alias.” For his performance, Garber was nominated for three Emmy Awards. He also played the character of Dr. Martin Stein, who is half of the superhero Firestorm, on “The Flash” and “Legends of Tomorrow.”

Officiating a Celebrity Wedding

While Garber has long kept private about his personal life, he did come out as gay in an interview in 2012. During this time, he also mentioned that he had been in a long-term relationship with Rainer Andreesen, an artist and model who is also from Canada. Garber and Andreesen married in 2015. Garber is also a registered minister of the Universal Life Church. In 2005, he was asked by his friend and “Alias” co-star Jennifer Garner to officiate her marriage to Ben Affleck. According to several sources, Garber and his partner were the only guests invited to the wedding.

Entertaining Crowds for Decades

While many people might not immediately recognize Victor Garber’s name when they hear it, most people have seen his face before. Whether you know him from film, television, or his short career as a musician, it is hard to deny the talent of this impressive entertainer.
