When you hear people talk about a DJ in the context of a wedding, they’re most likely talking about someone providing entertainment at a reception or other event. DJs know how to get the party started, creating playlists and sequencing songs that keep you on your feet for the entire reception. Can you imagine having a DJ perform your wedding and pronounce you and your new spouse married? This is what happened to Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Sullivan, who were married by the “World’s Biggest DJ," Tiësto.
Bring the Beat In
Tiësto is the stage name of Tijs Michiel Verwest, a DJ and music producer from the Netherlands. He has been in the business for nearly 30 years, releasing and producing records in dance genres such as trance, new beat, and various types of house music. Tiësto was voted “the Greatest DJ of All Time” by readers of the Mix magazine in 2011. DJ Mag readers voted him, “the best DJ of the past 20 years.” He is considered to be the “Godfather of EDM (electronic dance music)” by several journalists and peers in the music industry.
Tiësto is a Grammy award-winning whose releases have topped the charts around the world, including the United States. He started his career as a youth, playing for school parties. Tiësto began doing club residencies in the Netherlands and started to release his own records in the early 1990s.
Tiësto has been a headlining resident DJ at several dance clubs worldwide. He also performed live at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. In addition to being a DJ and producer, Tiësto has also launched a radio show and a televised docuseries about his life, “In the Booth.”
Life “In the Booth”
Tiësto created a documentary series about his life as a touring DJ. The series aired on YouTube where it was watched by millions of viewers around the world. For the second season, he wanted to feature more intimate, behind-the-scenes content. Wanting to focus on interacting with his fans and audiences, Tiësto gave viewers an up-close look at his life in Las Vegas, where he lived and worked as a resident DJ at Hakkasan Las Vegas.
The second season of “In the Booth” featured Tiësto securing his ordination from the Universal Life Church. He became a minister to perform a legal wedding for a lucky couple in his fanbase. Out of over 15,000 submissions, Blaine and Kristyn Sullivan were selected. Tiësto officiated the couple’s ceremony and took a photo with the couple and posted it on his Twitter account. He remarked that the wedding was unique because it was the only ceremony he’d ever do.
Last Night a Minister Saved My Wedding
Because Tiësto secured ordination through the ULC, he had the full legal standing to marry the Sullivans. Instead of it being a “symbolic ceremony” for the sake of the show, it was an actual marriage ceremony and hopefully one that the Sullivans will cherish for the rest of their lives.
Other public figures have become ULC-ordained ministers to perform legal weddings. Some have done so for close loved ones. Others have done so to generate regular income. Some like Tiësto have gotten ordained to incorporate a wedding into existing produced content.
Throughout the United States, a wedding must meet a few requirements to be lawful. One requirement is that the ceremony is performed by clergy or certain court officials. The ULC believes that everyone has the right to take control of their spiritual journey. To that end, the church offers a simple plan for ordination that doesn’t require years of seminary, law school, or interdisciplinary studies.
