In the world of celebrities, there are plenty of individuals who establish successful careers for themselves without ever having to use their full names. From Cher to Madonna to Eminem, some performers attain stardom simply by showcasing their talents to the world. The same is true for superstar singer Adele. For years, Adele has seduced audiences with her powerful voice and songs centered around love, grief, and moving through emotional turmoil. Apart from her singing career, Adele is also one of several celebrities recorded as a minister of the Church of Universal Life.
Early Years and Myspace Fame
Adele was born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins in London in 1988. According to her friends and family members, she showcased signs of greatness from a very early age. According to her own anecdote, Adele claims that she became fascinated by singing voices somewhere around the age of four. From then on, she could be heard singing wherever she went. By the time she reached college age, she had her mind set that she would become an agent who represented other artists and singers.
Fate would ensure that Adele did not stay behind the scenes for long. Upon graduating, she included a variety of songs she had written in a class project. A friend decided to take some of these tunes and upload them to Myspace, which brought Adele a ton of attention from the public. In fact, it was her Myspace presence that landed her a recording contract with XL Recordings. The label has also signed such noteworthy musicians as Peaches, M.I.A., Vampire Weekend, The White Stripes, and Tyler the Creator.
Making It in America
Though a success in the United Kingdom, Adele had difficulty establishing herself in the United States for a variety of reasons. Struggling with drinking and a controlling boyfriend, Adele would cancel a major American tour in early 2008, further complicating her ability to bring her music to the States. Thankfully, this would all change after the singer made an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in the fall of 2008. Adele would not only wow television audiences, but her album “19” would immediately skyrocket to the top of the charts the day following her televised appearance.
Adele’s success would continue throughout the years that followed, with the singer reaching impressive heights in a short window. In fact, she is the first woman ever to simultaneously be named Artist of the Year by Billboard while also topping both the Billboard Hot 100 charts and the Billboard in 2011. After this, she underwent throat microsurgery, a decision that would keep her from performing for a short while. She returned to the music scene in 2012, where Adele continued to blow audiences away with her powerful singing abilities.
Willing To Go the Distance
Amidst all of her fame, Adele has never forgotten about her supporters. The singer has mentioned that being away from London for too long fills her with overwhelming homesickness for her friends and family. This dedication to the people she cares about has become apparent in many ways over the years. In 2018, she became a registered minister of the Universal Life Church. She took on this responsibility as a way of presiding over the wedding of her good friend, comedian Alan Carr, to his partner.
According to Adele herself, she offered to take on the role of officiant. Not only did Adele become a minister for Carr’s wedding, she also took on all of the responsibilities related to planning the event. Considering she was simultaneously performing around the world, it shows just how dedicated the singer is to the happiness of her close friends.
Chasing Pavements and Caring for Loved Ones
Though Adele might be known for her powerhouse vocals and her exceptional songwriting abilities, her love for her family and friends motivates almost all of her actions. It is easy to understand why such a bright and talented individual decided to join the ranks of the ULC.
